Matlock Bath

In 1698 warm springs were discovered in Matlock Bath leading to the construction of a bath house where wealthy Victorians used to come to take the waters.

Princess Victoria's royal visit in 1831 confirmed the village as a society venue of the time.

The village has welcomed many other famous historical visitors including Ruskin and Lord Byron (whose poem etched on a window at the Temple Hotel, still remains).

Nicknamed 'Little Switzerland' by the Victorians, the romantic nature of the village still remains and today Matlock Bath continues to enjoys popularity with a wide range of visitors from far and wide.
Often described as a 'seaside town without the sea' or a 'Mecca for bikers' this quirky little place has something for everybody. Click here for map.

The Grand Pavilion, built in 1910 as a theatre and music venue has been providing entertainment for almost 100 years; sadly now in decline the Save the Pavilion Group is trying to save this iconic building.

Take a stroll along 'The Front' and browse the shops - better still, plan your shopping by visiting the shops from the comfort of your armchair by clicking on the links in the menu at the top of this page. From the Pavilion at one end of the village right through to the train station at the other end - there is something for everyone in Matlock Bath; shops selling clothes, novelties, gifts, jewellery, sweets, ice creams and much more all line the picturesque 'front' overlooking the beautiful River Derwent across the road.

Why not stop for refreshments at one of the many cafes, tea shops or restaurants along the pavement? Perhaps taking a few minutes to watch the world go by seated at one of the many outdoor tables all jostling for space along the sun-drenched 'front'.
